This is a special day for many of us who have had parents, spouses, and/or children who have served or are serving in the military. It is especially poignant if we cannot communicate our admiration, appreciation, and pride in these relatives ~ whether they are distant from us because of death or separation.
Someone asked last week if I thought that my son's service in Iraq plays into his estrangement ~ he most definitely has PTSD and was receiving counseling until he was honorably discharged. He was one of the ones in charge of clearing the most dangerous road in the world at that time of IED's. He was also a field medic and boasted that he could keep anybody alive until help arrived as long as their head was still attached - he knew where to put his fingers to stop bleeding, etc. He shared with me once about picking up body parts --- can you imagine what that does to a tender heart? So my heart goes out to him today...
How many of you have veterans that you are remembering today? I share with you my favorite Veterans song ~~~~~ "Veterans of the USA" by the Goad family
My other favorite: "God Bless the U.S.A." by Lee Greenwood
And if you need a good cry: "Letters from War" by Mark Schultz
Please join with me in tears ~ of both pain and gratitude as we remember............

Thank you so much for this post today. You answered my question about your ES. How could it not affect a person?
We thank all of our veterans for their service to our Country. For me, that includes my husband and dearly departed father.
I love the songs. My favorite is "I'm Proud to be an American".

I posted on FB this morning a "Thank You" to all our Veterans, past, present and future, including my late dad and my husband. They are the ones who made this Country great.
Everloving, I also thought your son may suffer from PTSD from his years of service. PTSD can spill over into other parts of their lives and I know there are many meds and therapies but God is the true Healer. Prayers being lifted for your es's healing and, of course, reconciliation. Thank you for your Post.

That was lovely - thank you! My non-estranged son is currently serving and leaves for his 2nd deployment in early January. From what little I do know, even if one isn't technically diagnosed with PTSD, deployments change people and it's often difficult to readjust to normal life. Praying your son will recognize and get the help he needs! And that a reconciliation is part of what helps him!
