Just in case some missed my update because of the change in DS, and our moving to a new site, I thought I'd repost my post that I recently posted at our DS site. Here it is:
I wanted to share how the meeting with my ES went on Saturday. I posted earlier about grandsons making contact with us, and then my son texting to invite us over.
Overall, our get together after over 4 years of estrangement went well. Two days before, our son-in-law (daughter 's dh) called to tell us that our ES wanted to be with us, but he was not ready to talk about those things surrounding the estrangement. We assumed already that was so, because ES invited us to a cook out, with My daughter, son-in-law and all five grand kids there. We did not think he would want any serious conversations with everyone present. Our son-in-law also shared that my daughter was also fearful that I would be real emotional and press for a more serious discussion, which might cause her brother, our ES to pull back. As she wants so much for this to be the beginning of healing for our family, she was having anxiety over this get together. My son-in-law also shared that or daughter-in-law had been the one urging ES for quite awhile to make contact with us and end the estrangement. That surprised us.
We ended up getting together at Daughter and son-in-law's, instead of ES's as originally planned, because of construction of an in ground pool at ES's. They decided it was unsafe to have everyone there. Daughter bought a bunch of 4th of July paraphernalia which the GC had fun dressing us in, and wore themselves. ES's three ran out to greet us, with DD's two. , when we arrived. It was a joy. Daughter-in-law greeted us with warm hugs. ES (Is he, or is he no longer an ES- time will tell) was reserved, very nervous, but as the evening went on he relaxed more and we talked about politics (Trump and Hillary provide lots of discussion material), work, the grand kids, etc. light easy conversations, it was good. The grandkids spent a lot of time entertaining us with singing and dancing. The oldest,14, (my son's) and youngest, 8, (my daughter's) are such hams. Cute.
God answered my prayers, and my emotions were under control (I did not cry), but I felt such joy. Sometimes I felt like I was in a dream. A good dream. Dh and I came home feeling hopeful.
This was a start. We made no plans for an additional get together; we'll have to see how it goes. Later this week Dd and former ES (I hope) and their families are leaving for a week vacation together in. I hope, when they get back and my father-in-law is here we can all get together again.
