It was Christmastime 27 years ago when I first heard this song couched in a children’s story written by Frank Peretti. We had recently moved, bringing our meager possessions and past-due bills with us. Now we were trying to recover from a one-year stint at the small, struggling school that had brought us down here. We were the family which had bags of food or clothes left outside our door. Things were so desperate that I had to make such choices as whether to purchase toilet paper or food: toilet paper was a necessity...Ramen and WIC foods were our standbys.
I had just gone shopping with what little money we had and returned home in the dark with the snow softly falling. Christmas music had been playing on our Christian radio station, but I hardly noticed. Normally, the magic of the season would have lifted my spirits, but not this night. I was in utter despair, hopeless, suicidal, scared --- with no emotional strength to take care of my husband (who had lost his job and was now working at a fast-food drive-through) and four children (ranging in ages from 4 to 17). There would be no Christmas pictures this year for there was little to celebrate and no money to develop film anyway.
I couldn’t bear to go inside and face the mounting problems, so I remained in the car as it slowly ate up gasoline we couldn’t afford. I mindlessly turned up the radio. My attention was caught by a story that was airing at that moment. The mother in the story had the same attitude I did. Then this song came on and the pent-up tears flowed as I caught the spirit of Christmas once more. So I share the song with you.
ALL IS WELL
Michael W. Smith
All is well ~ all is well: Angels and men rejoice.
For tonight darkness fell Into the dawn of love's light.
Sing A-le; Sing Alleluia
All is well ~ all is well: Let there be peace on earth.
Christ is come ~ go and tell That He is in the manger.
Sing A-le; Sing Alleluia
All is well ~ all is well: Lift up your voice and sing.
Born is now Emmanuel; Born is our Lord and Savior.
Sing Alleluia; Sing Alleluia; All is well.
The author of the story related that all is well because “For unto us a child is born.” All is well – “We just can’t see it yet. But some way, somehow, all is well.” The author continued, “God is the Grand Storyteller of our lives … In a stable in Bethlehem so long ago, God wrote Himself into history. Now He walks with us in the midst of the story, and He’ll stay with us until that story is completed His way, in His time, for His glory. And that is why all is well.”
If you are reading this now, then I know it is for you. God is writing your story, even now. Your tears are not wasted. That Baby grew up and experienced all the emotions you are going through, yet without sin. He knows; He cares. And He wants to give you more than a Merry Christmas ~ He wants to give you all of Himself.
