What was I thinking? A cabin in the woods and just reading would be so wonderful, but I was heading out west and promised to drop Matilda off at Aunt Millie's on the way. I wonder if she would like two birds instead of one? Well, I can't think about that right now. Ready, Matilda and "friend"? We're on the road again....

I found someone who wanted to buy the extra bird for a goodly sum so I sold it. Now I can go out West to a dude ranch with Matilda.

So, back on the road I go! I don't think I'll make anymore stops until I drop Matilda off with Aunt Millie. Then I'll be able....

to head directly to my dude ranch destination in Texas and just enjoy all those wonderful western accommodations I read about online... the horseback riding, beautiful trails, campfires, barbeques, country-western dancing and, who knows, maybe I will meet a handsome cowboy. Let me put my pedal to the metal. Hold on Matilda.....

Now we are having fun, just Matilda and I, enjoying the warm weather, wonderful scenery, listening to country western music and best of all, only an hour to Aunt Millie's. Loving this flat, open road, yes! Wait a second, what is that?

It's a person huddled by the side of the road - a young woman with a baby in her arms. "Drive on," I said to myself. "Not your problem." Yet, I found myself slowing down as I ...

...that this was my own version of the Christmas story. A young woman, in less than comfortable surroundings, with a baby, just needing help from a stranger. I pulled over, opened the door for her, and rigged up a makeshift car seat for the baby in the back. Once we had started to drive on, I asked her name.
"It's Mary," she said with a smile. It was all I could do to keep the car on the road. Mary!!! Mother of Jesus. God's plans and timing never cease to amaze me!!! She asked about the now-quiet Matilda in the back and I....

told her I was heading out West for Christmas vacation and that my neighbor asked if I could deliver Matilda to his Aunt Millie on the way. I was about to tell her about my recent experience in that little town but, for some reason, it didn't seem important. Instead, I shared with her that I was heading out West because I really had no family. I told her I was divorced some time ago and my only daughter, who was expecting her first baby, had suddenly stopped calling me or visiting me and said she just needed "some space" and not to contact her, although she did text me to say that she was going to spend this Christmas with her in-laws. So...
